Capacitive Touch Screen Technology

Capacitive Touch Screen Technology

Capacitive touch screen technology has come a long way and it is fair to say we use them in our lives on a daily basis.

From self-service ordering machines in cafes and restaurants to self-service ticket vending machines at the cinema or train station, and of course not forgetting cell phones and tablets, capacitive touch screens span a wide variety of applications.

These convenient displays that can be touched are commercial grade capacitive touch screens. The market demand for capacitive touch has grown significantly in the past few years due to the increased use of touch screens on our cellphones and tablets, as well as other touch related devices.

Due to the conductivity and high transparency of ITO, it acts as a critical feature on most robust capacitive touch solutions and is used for most display or optically critical products.

A Capacitive touch screen makes use of the fact that the human body is conductive to detect touch. There are two types of capacitive ITO touchscreens, the surface and projected capacitive.

While the surface capacitive screens use an electrode in each corner to detect touch, the projected capacitive screens use a matrix of capacitors to project an electrostatic field which allows the screens to detect touch.

With the state-of-the-art coating plant and machinery purpose-built by ITO Touch, we have managed to create a lean manufacturing process for capacitive touch lenses, enabling us to make the prices of a directly coated part far more competitively priced than an ITO film-based solution which requires significantly more labour costs and processing stages to produce.

Market-leading capacitive touch screen manufacturer ITO Touch (Part of the Diamond Coatings group) can produce X-Y resistive, ready-to-use capacitive screens ranging in size up to 1,000 mm x 1,000 mm and:

  • On substrates including rigid or flexible plastic and glass
  • With 90% visible transmission (equal to that of uncoated plastic/glass and higher than that of resistive touch screens, which is 70%) and
  • We can also supply all necessary chips, bonding, connections & patterning

We can also supply fully shielded capacitive screens and/or screens with various optional finishes (i.e. special optical, anti-reflective/anti-glare and/or hard coat coatings, etc.)
